The self-employed courier driver - who gave his name as Mr Ali - said he was spooked by the incident which happened on September The year-old said he was aware of the species as they exist in his native Pakistan. The driver said he contacted Birmingham Live as he wanted to raise awareness. He expressed shock at seeing one in the UK. Mr Ali, from Birmingham , claimed: "I was driving down a country road when a massive hornet flew into my van and sat next to me on my door card.
I pulled my handbrake and ran out of my van. I went to the passenger side window to take a pic but it flew off the door. The alleged sighting comes after The National Bee Unit, which works on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, this week confirmed sighting and monitoring was underway to detect further Asian hornets. The sighting was made in the Rayleigh area of Essex. The Asian hornet is smaller than the UK's native hornet and poses no greater risk to human health than native wasps and hornets, Defra said.
