I think the lessons it teaches are useful not just for those who are same sex attracted, but also for single Christians, and any Christians dealing with sexual temptation. Top critical review. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 August I agreed with other reviewers that the story was hard to get into at first. Her story is certainly interesting but I found it difficult, not because of the subject matter but because of the way she uses abstract langage - both religious and poetic.
Religious terms are used profusely and their meaning is assumed. Her love of poetry definitely comes out in her writing but for me it overcomplicates the prose and disrupts the natural rhythm of the book. Why make reference to 'those who I share a last name with' instead of simply referring to 'my family'.
It bewilders me. I had to re-read over several passages to check I had the meaning right. There is broadly speaking a lack of creativity in the chapter headings where the title represents the particular year of her life rather than basing it on a strong theme. Major big life events such as marriage and children could have had a chapter to themselves but instead it pops into the story taking the reader completely unawares.
