The air of romanticism that we all associate with France is not just a stereotype. It is deeply rooted in truth. The language, the food, the cafe culture, the music, and that flawless French style combine to create a unique atmosphere that feels a bit nostalgic and not of this time.
Sleeping somewhere quintessentially French with a gorgeous balcony that looks out onto a sea of layered rooftops also adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the entire experience. The Airbnb is in a great location just a 5 minute walk from Marseille Saint-Charles train station in the 1st arrondissement. To get to the Old Port takes about 15 minutes on foot, or only two tram stops if you prefer public transportation. Be aware that the apartment is on the 4th floor of the building with NO elevator, so you want to be very sure that you have all of your belongings before you go out.
It all started with a very warm welcome from hosts Melissa and Pat. Melissa was even kind enough to invite me out for drinks one night, which I begrudgingly had to decline due to work. There are plenty of Airbnb hosts out there that treat their properties like hotels, but not Melissa and Pat.
Their warmth and genuine kindness did not go unnoticed. And so, for one week in Marseille, I felt like I was living in a beautiful French dream. I found myself in a stunning apartment with the aforementioned balcony and breathtaking viewsβ¦made even more magical by high ceilings and enormous windows. I let old French music from the local radio station fill the rooms. I made sure I always had a good bottle of wine around, and I sat out on the narrow balcony often.
