Sorry for raising this zombie thread from the grave, but I just wanted to post to say that as I don't have a team in my city, I found that basing my club choices on my politics was a really good way to do it.
Club allegiances for most people are largely arbitrary anyway, and this way at least gave me a reason to root for my adopted teams. It made me feel sort of connected to the club even though I'm a newcomer.
