As one of the most visited cities in Europe, Amsterdam is very safe for solo travellers.
This vibrant city is known for its warm hospitality and welcoming atmosphere! Furthermore, crime rates in Amsterdam are pretty low when compared to other European destinations. Although petty crimes such as pickpocketing can be rife, this is a pretty common issue across the globe. Amsterdam is also renowned for its inclusive values, creating an environment that promotes diversity and respect. In fact, the Netherlands were the first to legalise same-sex marriage and continue to celebrate freedom, diversity and different cultures.
As a solo traveller, it should bring comfort knowing that the country values individuals from all walks of life! After three trips to the Dutch capital, two of which were alone, I can say with confidence that solo female travel in Amsterdam is incredibly safe.
In fact, I even felt safe at night as I bar-hopped in the city centre. At any given time of day, well-lit streets, bustling pedestrian areas, and reliable public transportation networks ensure that you can get around the city safely! Amsterdam is home to many amazing bars, cosy pubs and dance clubs making it one of the best places to go in Europe for a night out.
But is Amsterdam safe at night? It is indeed! On any given night, the city centre tends to be rammed with locals and tourists out on the town. Furthermore, with well-lit streets and a low crime rate, Amsterdam is generally safe, even for a solo female traveller! As with any destination worldwide, using common sense is key as a solo traveller. Stay alert and avoid areas known for crime or danger. Especially at night. Similarly, keep your phone, purse and important documents in a zipped bag or firmly in your hand.
