Printable Version. Had her since mid March now, and I've done a reasonable bit so far. Went for a cert, and got failed on 11 things, bugger!
I jacked it up, started taking everything apart and it turns out the front shocks bilstein coilovers are designed for an AE86, and as such the stroke is too long, causing the bottom plate of the shock to foul on the lower control arms at full extension. Took them to Autolign, and got the stroke shortened considerably. We had to change the design a couple of times, seeing as the sway bar also acts as the caster arm, but I think we got it right in the end.
I had to get some new ball joints, and it turns out they're the exact same size as a Mazda 6. There is a possibility I've been told that the sleeve mount for the sway bar may rotate on the shaft of the LCA, but my certifier doesn't think it'll be a big problem, and I can always put some key steel through if it does move.
The diff was next on the list, so with the help of a mate who's far more knowledgable than me, we pulled the diff head out.
Lo and behold, it's not locked, but is severely over-shimmed. Took the thou shim out, and the diff is ready to go back together. While I had all the various suspension bits out, I thought I may as well go and get some better springs. The old ones were too high and WAY too soft for my liking, and some pics with the previous owner showed some major body roll: I was told the old ones were lb all round, and my suspension man Grant Stocks put them to the test, and discovered that the progressive rears were only lb in the first inch!
