My husband and I are traveling to Nicaragua in May. We plan on spending most of the time in San Juan Del Sur. My husbands family is from Esteli , he lost touch with them 25 years ago. I was thinking about spending a couple of days there as well to see if he could try to locate some of his family. Is Esteli safe and friendly enough for us to explore and see if we can find his father, grandparents, etc?
Estelli is fine, as safe as anywhere, why would it not be? Safe compared to what? Managua is the main issue as far as safety. I appreciate your responses and already have the Moon guidebook. I just wanted to double check on the safety of the area, as things do change from time to time.
As far as SJDS, I have done a lot of research on it and it is where we want to spend the majority of our time, as it has what we are looking for in our vacation. To each their own :. Esteli is a nice safe area where you can enjoy of walking in different areas in town which as not change that much from many years ago except for some extra Cigar shops, natural trails open to the public and more Spanish schools, as you know Nicaragua is a poor country where family live for many generations together so maybe if your husband still Remember the street where he used to live there are good chances that part of his family is there another way how to find his relatives is on FB fan pages of the city or buy a cellphone go to Esteli and whenever there is local Football on TV send messages to the network and messages are publish on the bottom of the screen you will find lots of idiots try to hook up with girls but lots of people see this things.
Thank you so much for your help Byron. My husband has never been to Nicaragua , so wouldn't know where the family used to live. His father was from Esteli but lived in California when he disappeared 25 years ago and we aren't even sure if he is living in the states or moved back there. I have been looking on Facebook and messaging people that live there with the same last name but no one has responded. I tried my best with the message but my Spanish isn't that great so they may not have understood it.
To call it a dump is not only inaccurate but an insult to the Nicaraguan people. It's clean and beautiful and seems very safe. While there are many tourists here from around the world, including the US, I mostly see Latin American families enjoying the area. Tonight I met an American couple from Baltimore.
