July 3, by jillianhayton 1 Comment. Seats were uncomfortable, food almost inedible but I did manage a couple of hours sleep. It must be a difficult place to land as we seemed to be all over the place before the wheels finally hit the ground. Time zone change had us arriving on San Miguel Island at 6. Why is that we check two bags together but they come off the other end 20 mins apart? At least they did both arrive.
Our rental car pickup was hassle free and after messing around for a while to get my Europe Sim working we were on our way. I had booked our stay for the Azores on the opposite side of the island to the airport at a small town called Capelas β only about a 15 min drive from the airport.
What an interesting drive β for almost the entire journey the road was flanked with amazing hydrangea bushes β in full bloom and mainly in shades of pale blue. A very welcome breakfast was waiting for us at our accommodation β a small 6 room house. Very comfortable and just the ticket for a couple of weary travellers. It is lovely and clean with a covered sitting out area out from our room looking out to a verdant garden. Conked out after breakfast and had a 4 hour long nap, which refreshed me but Bob was still out of sorts.
We opted for a short walk down to the coast β it was a bit hot and very humid so we were flagging again by the time we got back. Very rugged coastline and very obvious that this is a volcanic island.
As Bob was still not feeling good we decided that he should get checked out β so Google found me a hospital that had an emergency dept abut 20 mins away β the photo looked alright but the reality was a little different. Bob was shunted off the the waiting room and he reported that it was very rundown β but again they were efficient.
