A Virginia man traveled earlier this year to England to have sex with a year-old girl he met online, according to a federal agent. Hatfield, 23, of Franklin, was indicted last week on three felonies: coercion and enticement of a minor, travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places. The girl told her mother she needed to go to the doctor, and the mother called police. The girl originally told her mother Hatfield was 17, but he was really 22 at the time of the visit.
An investigator with the Derbyshire Police Department interviewed the girl about Hatfield. She said she told him her real age and that she believed they were in a real relationship.
She did not want Hatfield to get in trouble. The girl said they discussed having sex before he came to England. And Wolpert found text messages between Hatfield and the girl where they talked about engaging in sexual acts and discovering the chlamydia.
