Also, it is all cash transactions, so you will have to go with lot of money. Don't do it. Thank you Iaviniam, I had a feeling this might be the answer. Lover of gem stones but by no means an expert. It is true that you are more likely to be scammed, and as Laviniam stated, it is better if you go with a trustworthy local.
It is better you get a personal driver for yourself for the stay in Sri Lanka and I suggest you get in contact with a budget tour guide driver guide , so that you will have the trust and security all along your tour until you return.
If you want to look at gems and jewellery, there is a very nice showroom and a museum in Kandy. In fact they are also the owners of the Kandy Lake Club that has a cultural show. Here is the link. You don't have to buy, go and look. Sri Lanka.
