The born-again Christian was doing what she has loved doing for more than two decades: Bringing people to the Lord and praying for the revival of the Flint area. This is a woman who made headlines earlier this summer for facing off - lovingly - with a Carriage Town neighborhood resident, Adam Gerics, whose house was decked with skulls and hanging skeletons to ward off intruders.
She and a handful of associates brought a cake as a "love offering. The rally, which touched off the prayer day between Coldwater and Bristol Roads, is just part of Spears' ministry. She shows up in her trademark red Soul Winning T-shirt at street corners and outside business establishments - including bars, night clubs and Dort Highway sidewalks where prostitutes often hang out - at all hours of the day and night. Saginaw Street, where she hands out food and clothing while - always - talking to people about the salvation of their souls.
As part of her "storefront ministry," Spears often gets permission from a grocery store owner, buys hot dogs from the store, cooks them in the store parking lot and hands them out to people who show up. Normadeen Thompson, 61, of Flint has been going on street ministry trips with Spears for the last two years. There was a time when Spears would ride a bus provided by Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, pick up people and drive them to their destination. On the way, she would talk to them about their need to get right with the Lord.
She said she has always been treated politely in her street ministry, even by those not interested in her message. It was Spears' own emergence from alcohol and a drug habit in that spurred her to establish her Soul Winning Jubilee street ministry.
