James Church, reported the church is looking into opening throughout the week. Image courtesy of Ling-Mei Wong. Ken Fong gave an update on local crime. A man was arrested for trespassing on Tyler Street on March 6. He refused to leave the premises until the police arrived and would not leave the front of the building, as he waited to see someone.
After a lengthy standoff, he was arrested. He had been warned on previous occasions. James Church is looking into opening its lower church for daily Mass, said Simon Ho, parishioner and former principal of the Josiah Quincy Elementary School. Its upper church opens on Sundays for worship services, but the lower church is not open during the week, due to previous vandalism and theft.
The church will ask other houses of worship for safety plans and plan programming with community organizations. Diva Beauty Salon at Harrison Avenue sought community support to add massage as a primary use of its site, which is currently zoned for accessory use.
The salon opened in to sell beauty products and added massage services in , said owner Ming Ying Wang. An accessory use would mean massage comprises less than 25 percent of operations; demand for massage has increased. Boston Police had raided several massage parlors in and one arrest included an unlicensed massage therapist at Diva Beauty Salon, who had offered illegal prostitution services.
Wang said she was unaware of the illegal activity and does not condone it on the premises. Fong said more than 25 massage parlors operate in Chinatown. Massage licenses are issued by the state, so local police do not have jurisdiction to enter massage parlors. Undercover police raids, such as the one in , face stringent legal review on the definition of sex for payment.
