Well, there is now a new version of this scam, compared to which the old tea scam looks almost harmless!! Sadly, I had to make this experience when I was staying in Kunming the capital of Yunnan province a few weeks ago. I stayed in the dorm in Camellia Hotel in Kunming, and had to find out the next morning that the two Chinese girls who were the only other 'guests' there I was traveling alone were professional con artists part of a kind of organized gang.
I can tell you, I was really shocked to find out that I had been staying all alone there with them! She was or at least tried to be very cheerful and outgoing, said that she was also traveling on her own, and that she loved to meet people from other countries, and if we didn't want to eat dinner together etc. However, I found her a bit annoying, so I went to eat on my own. This con artist used a different strategy, she was much calmer and let actually me start the discussion.
I was talking a bit to her and it turned out that she, too, was traveling alone something which is in fact extremely unusual for Chinese girls- all the Chinese girls I know prefer to travel in groups and never go on their own!!
