Updated July 04, Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young says Senator David Leyonhjelm was "slut shaming me" when he told her to "stop shagging men" during a parliamentary debate about violence against women. Senator Leyonhjelm could face a parliamentary censure for derogatory remarks made about Senator Hanson-Young. He has refused to apologise to her , telling 7. That is what he is doing. Senator Leyonhjelm said he was willing to apologise to Senator Hanson-Young, providing she made three public announcements.
He said he wanted her to say "she no longer believes men are collectively responsible for the actions of those men who commit violence". Senator Leyonhjelm has also said that before he would apologise he wants her to say that she accepts that individuals are responsible for their own actions and cannot blame others. He also wants her to say that women should have a right to carry pepper spray or mace to protect themselves against violence.
Senator Leyonhjelm said if she said those three things, he would publicly announce "I have misjudged her. I will forgive her for her previous comments and I will apologise for my previous comments".
Senator Hanson-Young thanked the leaders for their comments, and congratulated Mr Turnbull for drawing the link between disrespect for women and violence towards women. Senator Leyonhjelm should listen and he should resign.
Senator Hanson-Young said she was expecting the controversy, but not for Senator Leyonhjelm's subsequent actions. I stand for a decent society. Nothing he says to me is going to shake me from being able to do that. Senator Hanson Young has threatened to sue two media organisations and Senator Leyonhjelm over his comments.
