Hi, I booked a room at a cheap hostel in the Ulus district of Ankara. Since booking the room I have heard very negative things about the Ulus area. People say it is filled with casinoes and prostitutes. I do not plan on going out at night but do not want to be in a really unsafe area. I have been to Morocco and all over Egypt on my own. I am traveling solo and am a woman. Is this area totaly unsafe? I want tohave easy access to the Roman Baths and big museum and do not want to pay more then When Turkish people say casino, they mean some sort of nightclub, rather than a casino.
And, it is not "filled" with and prostitutes - but I wouldn't be too surprised to see one there. The old center of Ankara is a relatively poorer neighborhood, and that brings the associated issues, but not at an extreme level. But I wouldn't say it is unsafe.
